Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning Agency Honored with WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award in Fourth Straight Year of Recognition

(LAS VEGAS — October 4, 2018)

The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District (Metro Water District) announced today that it is a recipient of the WaterSense Sustained Excellence Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is the fourth consecutive year the Metro Water District has earned recognition for its innovative conservation programming and close collaboration with its network of partners.

Each year, the EPA recognizes WaterSense partners for their commitment to promoting water efficiency and strengthening the drought resiliency of communities across the country. More than 1,700 utilities, manufacturers, retailers, builders and organizations partner with WaterSense, a program sponsored by the EPA that promotes water-efficient products, homes and services. Very few are granted the Sustained Excellence Award, the highest distinction the program awards.

“The WaterSense program is an important tool that has helped metro Atlanta reduce its water use dramatically, even as our region’s population has grown,” said Charlotte Nash, Chairman of the Metro Water District. “We are honored to be recognized for our work promoting this highly effective program.”

In 2017, the Metro Water District collaborated with its 55 member utilities on a range of programs to promote water conservation. These included:

  • Providing tool kits to promote WaterSense campaigns and events— including Fix a Leak Week, Sprinkler Spruce-Up, and Your Better Bathroom
  • Launching a technical assistance program to help member utilities promote several EPA conservation programs
  • Working with The Home Depot to help promote member utilities’ toilet rebates in stores
  • Educating residents and real estate agents about the relationship between septic systems and water efficiency, including hosting a septic tank pump-out and educational event which promoted WaterSense labeled products
  • Spearheading or participating in events and campaigns that spotlight the WaterSense program, including the fifth annual Water Drop Dash 5K and Water Festival, a Household Water Audit assessment, and the U.S. Water Alliance’s Imagine a Day Without Water

WaterSense has been instrumental in the Atlanta region’s efforts to reduce water use. Since 2001, total water use in metro Atlanta has fallen by more than 10 percent, even as the population increased by more than one million.

Since it began in 2006, WaterSense has helped Americans save a cumulative 2.7 trillion gallons of water and more than $63.8 billion in water and energy bills.

“Through innovation and commitment, our partners are helping to transform the marketplace for water-efficient, high-performing products and homes,” said Veronica Blette, WaterSense program manager. “The WaterSense Sustained Excellence, Partner of the Year, and Excellence Award winners are leading the charge to save water, energy, and money for future generations.”
