Residents Urged to Conserve Water Amid Drought Conditions

Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District Shares Tips to Save

ATLANTA (April 27, 2026) — With dry conditions persisting across the metro Atlanta region, the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District is urging residents and businesses to take steps now to conserve water and help protect limited water supplies.

Below-average rainfall combined with higher seasonal water use — particularly outdoor irrigation — increases pressure on the region’s rivers, reservoirs, and drinking water sources. Without meaningful conservation, water levels may continue to decline, making it more difficult to meet essential needs.

“Water is a shared resource, and during dry periods like this, every drop counts,” said Danny Johnson, Manager of the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District. “Simple actions — like watering wisely, fixing leaks, and reducing unnecessary outdoor use — can make a meaningful difference in stretching strained water supplies for our communities.”

Outdoor watering is one of the largest drivers of increased water demand during dry conditions. Watering too frequently or during the heat of the day can lead to significant waste through evaporation and runoff. Georgia law allows outdoor watering only between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m., when cooler temperatures help reduce evaporation and make watering more efficient. The District encourages residents to follow these guidelines and be mindful of how much water is being used. Even with conservation efforts, it will take sustained and significant rainfall across the region’s river basins to fully replenish water supplies. Until then, continued awareness and responsible water use are critical. For the latest drought information and resources, visit: gadrought.org.
