Are you into DIY? Here are some easy things you can DIY around your home during Fix a Leak Week and throughout the year:

Look for dripping faucets, showerheads, sprinklers and other fixtures inside and outside your home. Check toilets for silent leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank and waiting 15 minutes to see if color appears in the bowl before you flush. If you see color, you’ve got a leak.

To use less water without a noticeable difference in flow, install a WaterSense labeled aerator on your bathroom faucet. Make sure to tighten hose and pipe connections, too.

If you are replacing fixtures in the bathroom or kitchen, be sure to purchase WaterSense labeled models, which use 20 percent less water and perform as well as or better than standard models. Even a toilet flapper needs to be replaced every few years to help prevent silent toilet leaks. Be sure to jot down the make and model of your toilet before you head to the hardware store. Doing a major renovation? Look for WaterSense labeled appliances.

The Water Drop Dash 5K celebrate US EPA’s Fix a Leak Week, a special occasion for us to acknowledge the fact that 1 TRILLION gallons of water are wasted annually nationwide because of household leaks. We celebrate this week by tightening loose faucets and pipes, checking the toilet for leaks, checking your outdoor spigot for leaks, and inspecting your irrigation system for broken lines and sprinkler heads. But really, it’s best to keep water conservation top-of-mind throughout the year.

Fix a Leak Week is March 17-23, 2025. Find out more about fixing leaks around your house at EPA WaterSense.
